Grant Winslow, a retired copywriter, strikes up an unlikely alliance with Golshan—a beautiful Persian woman—over a hookah and together they hatch a plan to stop a newly proposed freeway connector that threatens one of Southern California’s last remaining pristine canyons.

To succeed, they will need help from the Tornadoes, a local motorcycle gang; a renowned plein-air painter; and financial backing from a self-realization center led by its High Leader, Ba Da Bing, reputed to possess the power of levitation. If their plan works, they will mark the winter solstice by watching the sun’s elusive green flash as it slips below the Pacific horizon.
